OTCM

Year 2008 was bad, the start of Year 2009 is miserable.

OTCM single-handedly made that happen.

But then again, life is too short to feel sad. Guess i'll just have to take things in my stride then.

Roles and Responsibilities

My expectation of group members in a project is to simply fulfil their roles and responsibilities. Clearly, this was too simple an expectation. Over-the-Counter Medication (OTCM) project depicts that clearly.

The group comprises of 6 members, including myself. We were required to come up with a report on OTC medication that are found in Singapore and that treats certain illnesses. We are also required to make a medication kit comprising 20 different OTC medication. Sounds simple? That was what i thought at the beginning.

My group didn't get off to a good start, with none of the members knowing one another well( i can say the same for now), thus delaying the start of the project. By the time we wanted to start on the project, it was already the exam week. As a result, it was agreed that we would work on the project during the 2 week holidays.

Exams came and went. It was finally the start of the holidays. My initial thoughts was to enjoy the holiday and leave the project at a later time as it seem so easy. First week of the holidays was occupied due to the BIT camp. During the camp, one my OTCM group member sent me an sms, requesting for my email address so that he can delegate task for the project. I was thinking, wow! That's great, at least someone took the initiative to start. I was actually planning to contact the group members after the camp, but it seems like i was not required to do so.

After the camp, i checked my email and there it was, a MS word file sitting in my inbox waiting for me to open. When i opened the file, i was thoroughly disappointed. The level of English used was barely my primary 3 standard. The worst part? I'm known as Kenneh to him. There were 7 components in the report for the medication. I was to take 2, another male member 2, and the remaining 3 by 2 female members. No names are mentioned here as i do not want any trouble. The remaining 2 members are the initiator and another female member(Let's call her D). The initiator has delegated the task of compiling the report and medication, and presentation slides to himself and D. Seems like an easy job which do not require 2 people.

So there i was squeezing brain juice trying to find ways to obtain the 6 medication( supposedly 3 each for each category, with one category having 2) and to complete my part of the report. A few days later, initiator sent another sms stating that the deadline for the report parts and medication to be 26 december 2008 and that we have it ready by then so that he could collect from us. Over the course of the few days, i searched for the medication with help from my sister as she works in a clinic, and managed to find most of the medication. I had everything ready by 25 december 2008 and initiator came to collect the medication from me. I was actually feeling bad as i thought that i was the last person to submit as it was 1 day before the 'deadline'. Then i thought to myself, Hurray! One project down.

On New Year Day, 1st January 2009, i was out cycling with my Brudders at East Coast Park. On the way home, i received an sms from D, asking about the progress of the report. At that moment, she actually have not done anything as her job was to compile with initiator. It was about 6 days since the 'deadline', so i thought the report and the medication kit would have been done by then. D was worrying that she was not doing anything, so she asked me to send her my report part so that she could edit. When i reached home, i sent her the report part and chatted with her on msn. From D, i found out that i was actually the FIRST and ONLY ONE to complete my part of the report and medication.Apparently the other male member was not contactable and the other 2 female members had not given initiator the report parts and medication. Somehow i could hear glass breaking after receiving the news. I smsed the male member and the 2 female members asking them to give their parts to initiator asap. The 2 female members replied the next day saying they have given their report to initiator, with one still preparing the medication. I forgot to mention that one of the 2 smsed me a few days after 26 december 2008 asking me to send the medication to initiator when apparently i was the first and only one to do so.

I tried calling the other male member but kept receiving an automated reply stating that i have reached his mailbox. Panicking slightly, i contacted initiator and asked if the other male member have done his part. Initiator replied yes, and that only the medication part remained undone. I felt relieved as i thought once again that the report was done. At night, D contacted me saying she needed help with the other male member's report part. I was shocked as initiator told me that the report was done. I wasn't sure what the hell was going on, and after much questioning and i still have no answer, D was to finish the report part.

After everything was finished, initiator compiled the report and 'declared' it finished. The report was sent to D and i requested for a copy as well. D told me that initiator did not really compiled everything as the fonts were different, so were the alignments. The only thing he did was to combine all the files together, and add a TP logo to the cover page. Once again, D complained to me the shabby work done. Since it was part of her responsibility, she compiled the report again to make it presentable. After a very long time, she sent the report to me so that i could print it and submit. So there i was thinking happily that all i have to do was ensure that the fonts are correct and such. Upon receiving the report, i was FUCKING angry to find out that the 2 female members only did a total of 6 medication for the 3 categories, which were supposed to be at least 8. There was also a shortage of 1 from the part by the other male member, which i do not know whether he did do anything on the report, or whether his part was solely done by D. So all in all, we were short of 3 medications.

Basic calculation and COMMON SENSE and intelligence would tell us that each category should have 3 medication, which would total up to 21 medications, with 1 extra. This means that only 1 category can have 2 medications. For i don't know what FUCKING reason, the other 2 female members only did 2 medications for each category, resulting in a shortage of 3. Now, if they had common sense and intelligence, they would have took the effort to find 3 medications for each category, which i did, even though 1 of the medication would be an extra. Apparently this was not the case.

Lucky for US, i realised the mistake and went to find the medications( with the help of D) even though it was not the responsibility assigned to me. (See what i mean nic? We were right weren't we?)

After much searching, i realised that one of the medication that i did was wrong( thanks to D for pointing out), so in total i searched for 3 medication while D searched for another 1 medication and helping in the process. In the end, D who was worried that she was not doing any work did quite a lot of work, and so was i.

The only thing that i can hope for now is that all of them have the medication properly packed and labeled so that there would not be any more of this shit happening. Reminder to self* Contact initiator the following morning and ask about the medication kit. If it is not done,or not well done, i have to take over again like i did for the report.

Lesson learnt: Always have higher expectations of group members, even though higher expectations leads to higher disappointment.

Note to self: The others( other than D) are so going to suffer for peer evaluation.Suffer my wrath assholes

Chemistry Question

THe following is taken from dotaportal: http://forum.esnation.com/showthread.php?t=60873&page=118

The following is an actual question given on a University of Washington chemistry mid-term exam paper:

"Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat), or endothermic (absorbs heat)? Support your answer with a proof." Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law (gas cools off when it expands and heats up when it is compressed) or some variant thereof.

One student, however, wrote the following:

First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So, we need to know the rate at which souls are moving into Hell and the rate at which they are leaving. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different religions that exist in the world today. Some of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell. Since, there are more than one of these religions, and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all people and all souls go to Hell.

With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially. Now, we look at the rate of change of the volume in Hell, because Boyle's Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume of Hell has to expand as souls are added.

This gives two possibilities:

If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until all Hell breaks loose. Of course, if Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell freezes over. So which is it?

If we accept the postulate given to me by Ms. Krissy Jones during my Freshman year that "it will be a cold night in Hell before I sleep with you" and take into account the fact that I still have not succeeded in having sexual relations with her, then (2) cannot be true, and thus I am sure that Hell is exothermic.

This student got the only A.

This must be the most zai answer in an exam question i've read if this is true. Kudos to him/her for thinking of this.
